Newbie Chess is a new chess application for the Apple iPad. It offers a variety of graphical effects to help new or casual players learn game mechanics and strategy. These include attack lines showing where each piece could move to capture, hazard highlights showing when a piece is facing a credible threat, and piece names and values. All of these can be turned on or off. You can play against one of four custom AIs, or another human player, with or without a time limit. Finally, in addition to standard chess, Newbie Chess offers two variants often used by chess coaches: Chess960 and the Pawn Game.
