Local chess queen prepares for national competition

Vanessa Pham of Palm Beach County is a rising star among youth chess players.
The sixth grader at Woodlands Middle School west of Lantana won the title of Co-State Middle School Champion at the State Scholastic Chess Championship, held last month in Miami.
Pham, 11, is now preparing to compete in the Burt Lerner National Elementary (K-6) Championship in Atlanta, May 7-9.
Vanessa practices as a member of the Boca Chess Club. She began playing in the Chess Club at Discovery Key Elementary School.
